Beware! Never sign your child’s Canadian Passport

All Canadian passports have a signature line on page 3. Adults are required to sign their passports before they travel, however in case of child’s passport it’s different:

  • no signatures required if child is below 16 years of age
  • children between 11-15 years of age are encouraged to sign but passport is still considered valid without a sign
  • if child below 11 signs it, it’s still valid
  • Sign field must stay blank if child doesn’t sign
  • Parents or guardians should never sign their child’s passport as it will make it invalid

Certain airport authority people around the world might ask you to sign your child’s passport but you can guide them to signature policy of Canadian Passport.

Signature policy for border officials

It’s recommended to carry a printed copy of this policy with you especially if you travel outside Canada with your children.
