Visitor visa vs Super visa; which is a right program for my parents?

So, you are all excited to get your parents to Canada and show them what a beautiful and welcoming place it is. Now is the time to determine which program suits you and them the best. Today we are going to help you make this decision and understand difference between both programs.

Major difference being, if sponsoring person in Canada is not a permanent resident or Canadian Citizen yet then they are only eligible to get their parent(s) on visitor visa. Super visa allows parent(s) to stay in Canada up to 2 years without having to leave the country thus it requires applicant to go through medical examination as well. Furthermore, super visa is generally granted up to 10 years or till the validity of the passport of the applicant.

To be eligible for Super visa, sponsor must:

  • Be Canadian Citizen or PR
  • Meet the income requirements based off their family size
  • Provide invitation letter outlining their family size and how they meet the requirement of the program
  • Provide proof of medical insurance purchased from a Canadian entity in the name of parent(s). Minimum coverage should be CAD $100,000 (quotes aren’t accepted)

On flip side, there are no medical insurance or income requirements for visitor visa but it’s always good to have prove you are financially stable to take care of invitee.

Application fee for both visitor and super visa is same i.e. CAD $100. Residents of some countries may need to provide biometric too. Both applications may be filed online or paper based.
